Mardi Gras Casino is drawing a packed house five times a week for … bingo.

Patrons often are lining up an hour early for the free eight-game bingo session, filling the 450-seat third floor at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays, 6 and 9 p.m. Wednesdays and 1 p.m. Fridays. Prizes range from $75 to a progressive blackout that starts at $1,000 and grows to a maximum of $5,000.

Jamie Lozano of Aventura (with friend Tony Garcia of Hallandale Beach on his left) said when there are two bingo sessions in the same day, he often stays for both, and eats dinner or plays the slot machines at Mardi Gras in between. He and about 10 others have become friends, he said, and have a few laughs while playing bingo.

“People here are just very friendly,” he said.

In October, the casino began running bingo at the Dawg House, the casino’s second-floor sports bar. But that venue, which seated only about 320, became so crowded the casino converted its third floor for bingo. (The casino originally put slots on the third floor, which overlooks the dog track, but closed down the slots last year.)

Any member of the casino’s player’s club can get one free bingo card. Extra bingo cards are awarded for every five player’s club points earned on the day of the bingo games.

“We have a great time. The only thing that would be better about it would be if I won,” said Diane Bass, of Lauderdale Lakes.

By state law, horse tracks and dog tracks can’t operate for-profit bingo games. But the Seminole Indians can. For more than 30 years, the Seminole Casino Hollywood Classic has had daily bingo that requires buying cards.

Mardi Gras’ neighbor, Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino in Hallandale Beach, has free Bingo at 5 and 9 p.m. Tuesdays. The Isle Casino & Racing Pompano Park has short-term runs of Bingo.

9 Plead Guilty in Milwaukee Bingo Scam

Nine people charged in Federal Court for rigging a bingo game have pleaded guilty.  This happened at the Potawatomi Bingo and Casino.  A Deandre Russell was charged with organizing the scam of the Pick 8 game at the casino.  For those of you that don’t know what Pick 8 is, it is a player marked game where the players mark down 8 numbers on the card and then separate the two copies of the card.  The original goes into a locked box and the customer keeps the carbon copy.  If the player has all of their 8 numbers called within a certain number of calls, they win the jackpot.

Deandre helped players put the copies of the cards into the locked boxes after the game had started and the “won”. The scheme netted the group around $160,000.  The casino now says that it has changed its procedures in regards to the game.

MOUNT HEALTHY – James Landrum’s name is at the top of the list of people the Seven Hills Bingo group will not to take checks from any more.

The last time Landrum was spotted in the Mount Healthy bingo parlor a security officer chased him away.

Landrum, police say, scammed the bingo group – namely the Cincinnati Hebrew Day School in Golf Manor – out of $3,470 by writing 21 bad checks to the school which keeps proceeds from the Seven Hills Bingo operation.

Police in Springfield Township caught up with Landrum, 48 of Colerain Township, over the weekend and arrested him on an outstanding warrant.

Jack Rabenstein, the school president, said it is not uncommon for people to come into the bingo parlor with a check or credit card so that they can get cash for lotto tickets and bingo cards.

Landrum did this at least 21 times when he wrote checks from an account that did not exist. He first started doing this in 2005 when he wrote 16 bad checks that year, according to court records. He then disappeared from the Seven Hills bingo operation before returning in 2007 when he wrote six checks on a bogus account.

Landrum was released from jail Monday without having to post bond.
