Pa. bingo bandit escapes with cash despite chase
1Police say an armed robber made off with a suburban Pittsburgh church’s bingo game proceeds despite a car and foot pursuit by its pastor.
The Rev. Thomas Burke says a young man held up the bingo game Tuesday night at Good Shepherd Church in Braddock Hills. The masked robbery flashed a gun and demanded money, netting a few hundred dollars.
Burke and at least one parishioner pursued the robber in a car then on foot into a wooded area where he escaped.
Police detained a suspect but he was released after witnesses couldn’t say if he was the perpetrator.
Burke says he was running on adrenaline when he decided to chase the robber and he probably wouldn’t do it again.

Sertoma Charity Bingo shuts down
1Sertoma Charity Bingo shuts down | The Argus Leader | argusleader.com.
Sertoma Charity Bingo closed Friday and will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time for remodeling, Sioux Falls Noon Sertoma Club board member Jason Shanks said Monday.
Shanks, a spokesman for the group, declined to discuss the remodeling project “due to competition,” but he said the project has not yet begun. He declined comment on how soon or when bingo sessions will resume.
The video lottery area and kitchen at the facility, 506, N. Kiwanis Ave., remain open.
Monty Misfeldt, president of the club’s board of directors, said the board voted on closing bingo at its monthly meeting last Thursday.
“It was a board decision. We needed to do these things with remodeling and stuff,” Misfeldt said. “(The building) needs some help, it needs a facelift. It’s got some age to it.”
Sertoma Charity Bingo’s electronic sign on Kiwanis Avenue on Monday alternated the phrases “Bingo Closed” and “Lottery Open.” Signs on the front doors read, “No Bingo Tonight. Lottery Open. Kitchen Open.”
Misfeldt said that remodeling will begin “when everything falls into place.”
No building permits have been issued yet, according to the city of Sioux Falls’ online building permit database.
The Noon Sertoma Club met Monday at the bingo facility. Initially, Shanks said the group planned to discuss the remodeling project and timeline, but after the meeting he said he could not discuss the purpose of the meeting or elaborate on the project. The group’s meetings are closed to the public.
The Noon Sertoma Club normally meets at noon Tuesdays at Westward Ho Country Club, Shanks said.
Cal Geurts, general manger for Sertoma Charity Bingo, said the facility had two bingo sessions daily and three on Fridays. He declined comment on how many people typically attended the sessions.
Geurts said he ordered signs for the building that say “Bingo Closed, Lottery Open,” and said he learned of the board’s decision to close late Thursday night. Geurts declined further comment.
Randy Maas, manager at Burnside Bingo, said he saw a few more players during the weekend because Sertoma was closed. Burnside has two bingo sessions daily and three on Fridays and Saturdays.
Maas said about 70 percent of the Burnside players are regulars who staff members know by name
He added that he hasn’t heard negative comments about Sertoma Bingo closing.
“I think it did surprise some, but if they can’t go there they’ll come here,” he said. “If they want to play bingo, they’ll find a place to play bingo. It’s more the bingo than the location.”

Arden Hills Bingo Hall Robbed

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department has reported that the Pot O’Gold Bingo Hall was robbed at 1 a.m. last Saturday night.
The bingo hall is located at 3776 Connelly Ave. Two men came into the facility with guns and robbed the hall and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. They fled the scene by running down an embankment and then driving off in a white SUV that had been waiting for them.
Later that morning a Roseville police officer saw the vehicle getting on Interstate 694 at Lexington Avenue. With help from the New Brighton police and the sheriff’s office, they pulled the vehicle over and arrested the four occupants.
The sheriff’s office state that cash and other items linking them to the robbery were located in the vehicle.
Bingo by the Bay
1This article originally appeared here.
Bingo enthusiasts of all ages came out last weekend to play” Bingo By the Bay” and to support the youth ministry at St. Andrew by the Bay.
The St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church hall was filled with over 250 people last week, all hoping Father Martin would call their number and they would be one of the lucky ones to yell “BINGO!”
Last weekend’s “Bingo by the Bay” was a fundraiser to help offset the costs of local parishioners who are going to Catholic Heart Workcamp this June.
At the event, regular bingo wins would net the winner an “Eco-Chic Design” bag filled with prizes and a $50 gift card. The fortunate winner of a “special” game was awarded an “Eco-Chic Designer” bag with prizes and a $150 gift card. All the prizes were donated and local restaurants provided the gift cards.
If you weren’t winning at bingo, there was always a chance to go home a winner of the 50/50 Raffle or have your ticket called to win an Amazon Kindle, notebook computer or flat screen television.
The Catholic Heart Workcamp volunteers will spend a week in Lancaster, Pa., working to improve the living conditions of some of that area’s neediest residents. The group will be painting, removing debris, repairing walls and anything else needed to ameliorate conditions of the homeowners.
Sally Asero’s two sons are going this year.
“Many families have multiple kids participating,” she said. “We accept only high school age youth volunteers because of the nature of the work, but quite a few families have two in high school that want to participate. There is also a good mix of veteran work campers and first year participants.”
It will take almost $19,000 to cover the travel and living expenses of the volunteers and “living” expenses usually means renting space at a local school’s gymnasium for the week.
“Bingo by the Bay” is the youth program’s largest fundraising effort, but not their only one. Throughout the last few months, the kids have been busy washing cars and selling the ever popular Krispy Kreme donuts.
During this time, the volunteers are also skilled on home repairs and a few are given practice time with some of the tools that will be used. Another important aspect of their training is team building. During the time leading up to work camp, during the work camp and after they get home, the youth participate in various activities to help bring them together.
